About St Martin
St Martin is an active Church of England parish church on Fingle Street in Retford, Nottinghamshire. Dating from the medieval period, it is protected as a Grade I listed building in recognition of its exceptional historic and architectural importance.
The church was founded in the 12th century, with 1150 given as its building date. Its earliest surviving element is the south entrance, which dates to around 1200. Particularly notable are the richly patterned window designs in the south aisle and chancel, added between about 1300 and 1340. The western tower was built in the Perpendicular Gothic style, placing it in a later phase of medieval architecture. During the 19th century, the building underwent restoration.
