About St Helen
St Helen is a Church of England parish church at Grove, in the Retford area of Nottinghamshire. It remains a parish church and is protected at Grade II for its architectural and historic significance.
The site has medieval origins and may pre-date the Norman Conquest, since records compiled for Domesday note a church and priest at Grove. The present building was designed by C. Hodgson Fowler and dates from 1882. It comprises a nave and chancel, with a low tower housing two bells. Historic memorials include an alabaster floor slab commemorating Hugo de Hercy and his wife Elizabeth, with carved figures of an armoured man and a woman at prayer. Other monuments remember Katherine Neville and William Levinz. A two-manual Bevington pipe organ, made in 1859, was installed in the church in 1894.
