About St Giles' Church, Elkesley

St Giles' Church, Elkesley serves the Church of England parish in Elkesley, near Retford, Nottinghamshire. Dating from about 1300, it is protected as a Grade I listed building.

A place of Christian worship in the village was recorded in Domesday Book, although the earlier dedication was to All Saints, also known as All Hallows. The name St Giles first appeared in a directory in 1844. Built of limestone quarried locally, the church is designed in the Decorated Gothic tradition, with a main worship space, northern aisle, sanctuary and a pinnacled tower at the west end. Alterations in 1845 included replacement seating and reconstruction of some sections. Three bells, thought to have been cast no later than the mid-fifteenth century, remain in the tower. They are unusual survivors from before the Reformation, but cannot be sounded because their timber framework is unstable.
