About St. Stephen's
St. Stephen’s is the Church of England parish church serving Sneinton, a suburb of Nottingham in Nottinghamshire. Now part of the parish of St Stephen and St Matthias, it remains an active place of worship. The church is Grade II listed in recognition of its architectural and historic significance.
Christian worship on the site has medieval origins, although the present church was completed in 1837. Designed by Thomas Rickman and constructed by Nottingham builder W. Surplice, it is an early Nottinghamshire example of Gothic Revival architecture. Cecil Greenwood Hare enlarged the building from 1909 to 1912, following plans by George Frederick Bodley. Bodley also designed the high altar’s reredos, which was carved at Oberammergau with episodes from Christ’s life. Medieval choir stalls brought from St Mary’s, Nottingham, contain carved misericords. The tower clock, installed in 1865, has four faces, while the organ dates from 1872 and was subsequently enlarged and rebuilt.
