About St Peter's Church
St Peter’s Church is an active Church of England parish church on Priory Road in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. This Grade I listed building began as part of a religious community of Augustinian Canons Regular, commonly called Black Canons because of their dark clothing. The parish is shared with churches at Bleasby, Halloughton and Hoveringham.
A priory was probably founded here around 1119, in a protected valley near running water and a natural spring, with timber and building stone readily available. The medieval complex was extensive, with twin towers at the west end, a seven-bay nave, cloisters, a substantial chancel and monastic accommodation. Most of the priory was demolished late in the eighteenth century. The surviving cellars, one church aisle and the tower form the present building, which Thomas Chambers Hine restored in 1853. Parish registers survive from 1721, as earlier records were destroyed in 1780.
