About St Peter

St Peter is an active Church of England parish church in Widmerpool, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. The Grade II* listed church belongs to a united benefice with the churches at Willoughby-on-the-Wolds and Wysall. Although once dedicated jointly to St Peter and St Paul, it is now formally named St Peter.

The date of the earliest church on the site is uncertain, though elements derived from a medieval building have been identified, and parish records survive from 1539. A neglected earlier church was reconstructed in 1832. Its Gothic spire was badly damaged by lightning four years later, shattering every window, and was subsequently removed. Further rebuilding took place between 1888 and 1895, supported substantially by the Robertson family. A tower with three bells replaced the spire. Other features include carved lion and bull heads, war memorials, and a Hunter pipe organ from the 1890s in an ornate carved case.
