St John the Evangelist is an active Church of England parish church serving Butler’s Hill in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire, near Nottingham. It forms part of a group of local parishes alongside St Mary Magdalene in Hucknall and St Peter and St Paul at Westville.
Construction began in 1876 and the church was dedicated the following March. It was created to serve Butler’s Hill’s expanding community of miners and their families, on land donated by the fifth Duke of Portland. Frederick Bakewell and Albert Nelson Bromley designed the building in Linby stone, complemented by Bath stone dressings and brick buttresses. Robert Charles Clarke designed the chancel, which was completed in 1895. Memorial features include west windows commemorating local miners who died during the Second World War and an east window depicting the Crucifixion, dedicated to Butler’s Hill men lost in the First World War. A distinctive rood incorporates a wooden cross formerly used as a serviceman’s grave marker.
