About St Helena's Church
St Helena's Church is an active Church of England parish church in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Dating from about 1050, it is protected at Grade I for its exceptional architectural importance. The dedication commemorates Helena of Constantinople, mother of the Roman emperor Constantine.
Parts of the eastern end survive from the eleventh century, while the tower was added in the fourteenth century. Its details include an octagonal spire, four gargoyles and a renewed decorative table featuring carved faces. Lightning caused serious damage in 1868, prompting restoration by John Henry Hakewill in 1868 and 1869. This work included reconstructing the chancel, replacing the roof and installing new seating. Much of the stained glass also dates from 1869. Other features include a simple circular font on a restored medieval base, a Latin memorial to William Barrett, who died in 1760, and a marble tablet erected in 1919 as a war memorial.
