St Helen's Church stands on Nottingham Road in Trowell, near Nottingham. It remains the Church of England parish church for the village and belongs to a shared benefice alongside the parish churches of Awsworth and Cossall. It lies within the Southwell and Nottingham diocese and has Grade II* protection.
Trowell had a timber church by 801, and the surviving chancel originated in 1080. Most of the present sandstone structure was erected in the thirteenth century, with the western tower following in 1480. Charles Hodgson Fowler directed a substantial restoration in 1890. Its layout comprises an aisled nave of three bays, a two-bay chancel and a south porch. The tower rises in two sections, with battlements above and buttresses at each corner. Interior features include an eight-sided fifteenth-century font, glass designed by Charles Eamer Kempe and an organ made by Brindley and Foster in 1900. A clock originally produced for Nottingham Exchange in 1881 was relocated to the tower in 1927.
