About St Helen's Church

St Helen’s Church stands on Church Lane in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, and continues to serve as an active Church of England parish church. It is protected at Grade II* for its special architectural and historic importance. In the burial ground is a stone cross from about AD 1000, separately designated at Grade I and protected as an ancient monument.

The church has medieval origins. Its late fifteenth-century clerestory incorporates four windows in the Perpendicular style, while a classically designed porch and entrance date from 1785. W. H. Parkinson of Leeds oversaw substantial work in 1875–77, including replacement roofing, repaired windows, an additional aisle, a vestry and space for an organ. Coloured glass made in Munich was placed in the eastern window. A chapel commemorating the dead, designed by Sir Thomas Graham Jackson, followed in 1923. The tower holds six bells, with the two oldest cast around 1499. Charles Lloyd and Company supplied the organ in 1877, and it underwent restoration in 1958.
