About Saint Nicholas's
Saint Nicholas's is an active Church of England parish church on Maid Marian Way in central Nottingham. Part of the Diocese of Southwell, it serves worshippers from across the city, including many university students. Its churchmanship has been characterised as evangelical and charismatic. The building has held Grade II* designation since 1953, reflecting its particular architectural and historic importance.
Christian worship began on this site with a church founded during the eleventh or twelfth century. Royalist forces used its tower during the Civil War, leading the Castle governor to order its demolition in 1643. Nottingham remained without the church until rebuilding began in 1671; the present structure was finished in 1678. A clock face dating from around 1830 survives, although its mechanism was electrified in the 1970s. The church received its first organ in 1811, and an electronic Rodgers instrument replaced a later organ in 2010.
