Saint Mary's Church is a Church of England parish church at 40 High Pavement, in Nottingham’s Lace Market quarter. Regarded as Nottingham’s earliest parish church, it belongs to the Major Churches Network. It is one of five buildings in the city designated Grade I, reflecting its exceptional architectural and historical significance.
The site may have Saxon origins, and a church there was recorded in 1086. Most of the current building, at least the third to occupy the site, was constructed from the late 1300s into the early 1500s. The nave was complete by 1475 and displays a consistent Perpendicular Gothic design, while the tower dates from Henry VIII’s reign. A chantry doorway from the 1370s or 1380s retains medieval ironwork and is thought to be the oldest door remaining in Nottingham. Between 1843 and 1848, extensive work secured the tower and renewed the roofs and western frontage in a Gothic form.
