About Holy Cross Church, Epperstone

Holy Cross Church, Epperstone is an active Church of England parish church in Nottinghamshire, within the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. Dating from around 1250, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. Regular services are held, and the churchyard contains numerous headstones.

Constructed from local Epperstone stone, with Mansfield stone used for the window surrounds and arcade, the church retains work from several periods. Early 14th-century elements include the aisle’s east window, a small northern buttress and an adjacent entrance. The arcade, spire and tower followed later that century, with the tower incorporated into the nave’s western end. The nave roof dates from the 17th century, while restorations took place in 1853 and 1879. Memorials include a 14th-century recumbent figure and several monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Four bells survive, the earliest dated 1590, although one is reserved for the clock’s hourly chime.
