About Church of St Mary the Virgin
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is an active Church of England parish church in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Originating in the fourteenth century, it is recognised as a Grade I listed building. The parish is shared with churches and a mission room in Keyworth, Stanton on the Wolds and Bradmore.
Construction was interrupted when plague reached the village in 1350, and the building subsequently evolved across several centuries. The nave and aisles use roughly laid rubble stone, contrasting with the dressed square masonry of the later chancel and tower. Surviving medieval features include a fourteenth-century oak screen and an aumbry in the vestry for storing sacred vessels. A south porch containing stone seating was added during the fifteenth century. Restoration took place for Sir Thomas Parkyns in 1718, with further work in 1890–91 and 1911. Numerous historic memorials remain, while the organ was made by J. W. Walker & Sons in 1909 and reconstructed by Charles Lloyd in 1916.
