About Church of St Mary the Virgin
The Church of St Mary the Virgin in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, remains home to an active Anglican parish. It belongs to Peterborough Diocese and the Northampton archdeaconry, and maintains an Anglo-Catholic pattern of worship. The church holds Grade I protection, granted in 1970, making it a rare twentieth-century example at the highest level of statutory recognition.
Work began in 1908 and was completed in 1930 to a design by Sir Ninian Comper. Its architecture follows the Perpendicular Gothic tradition. Both the building and its interior reflect ideas associated with the Oxford Movement and the renewed emphasis on ceremony that developed during the Victorian period. The Misses Sharman, residents of Wellingborough, provided much of the financial support needed for its construction.
