About St Mary the Virgin
St Mary the Virgin is a Church of England parish church in Maidwell, Northamptonshire, situated beside Draughton Road. It remains part of a united benefice with Draughton, Faxton and Lamport. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
Although its foundation is dated to 1101, most of the surviving fabric was built during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The north and south entrances are the earliest remaining elements, while the western tower belongs to the thirteenth century. James Piers St Aubyn designed the chancel, which was added in 1891. Inside are memorials to Catherine, Lady Gorges, dating from 1634, and to members of the Haslewood family, commissioned in 1695 by Elizabeth, Viscountess Hatton. Parish registers survive from 1708.
