About Church of St Peter and St Paul
The Church of St Peter and St Paul is an active Anglican parish church in Abington, Northampton. Standing on Park Avenue South amid Abington Park, it is dedicated to the two apostles named in its title and has Grade II* protection.
Established no later than the early thirteenth century, the church first served Abington when it was a country village. The late twelfth-century western tower is the earliest fabric still standing, with details marking the shift from Romanesque design towards Early Gothic. A severe storm brought down the nave, side aisles and much of the eastern portion in 1821. Charles Squirhill designed their replacement, finished two years later on the previous footprint, creating a broad nave without aisles. Surviving furnishings include an octagonal fifteenth-century font, carved seating from the same century and an ornate pulpit made around 1700. The building also contains historic family memorials and glass including a 1982 Annunciation window created by John Piper with Patrick Reyntiens. Renovation followed in 1874, and vestries were constructed in 1938.
