About St Mary the Virgin
St Mary the Virgin is a Church of England church on Hall Lane in the Market Harborough area of Northamptonshire. Dating from the medieval period, it is protected as a Grade I listed building, reflecting its exceptional architectural and historic significance.
Originating in the 13th century, the church was constructed from ironstone and limestone sourced in Northamptonshire. Its prominent tower and slender broach spire are notable exterior features. Between 1864 and 1866, the Revd Richard Pulteney oversaw extensive restoration with advice from Sir George Gilbert Scott. The interior includes hand-carved oak seating with foliage decoration, together with a matching pulpit and priest’s desk. Clayton and Bell designed both the stained glass and the richly ornamented chancel, which incorporates marble, alabaster, coloured stones and gilding. Further features include a painted barrel-vaulted ceiling inspired by Peterborough Cathedral and chandeliers created by George Bodley.
