About Wesley Chapel
Wesley Chapel stands on Priory Street in York’s Bishophill district. The church is a Grade II* listed building and has been known as QChurch since 2018, following earlier periods as the Assembly of God Church and Rock Church.
Completed in 1856 to plans by James Simpson, the chapel originally seated 1,500 people. School facilities and a preacher’s residence followed in 1857, while further additions were made in 1907 and 1910, with a porch completed in 1914. Its Classical brick exterior has stone detailing, a pedimented frontage and rows of arched windows. Within, original seating survives beneath an oval gallery, and most windows contain stained glass, much of it Art Nouveau in character. A panel in the glazed foyer screen commemorates members of the congregation who died during the First World War. The organ was made by James Binns and installed in 1892.
