About St Saviour's Church, York
St Saviour’s Church, York, is situated in St Saviourgate, within York, North Yorkshire. Also historically called St Saviour in the Marsh, it is a former Church of England parish church and holds Grade II* listed status. Parish worship ended after redundancy was declared in 1954, when the congregation became part of All Saints’ Pavement. York Archaeological Trust now uses the building.
Its origins reach back to the eleventh century, while the surviving structure is largely from the fifteenth. Richard Hey Sharp rebuilt the two aisles during 1844 and 1845. Renovations in 1871 brought richly coloured roof decoration, refinished seating and gallery woodwork, and a new reredos crafted by T. Gibson Hartley. Workers also removed whitewash from the arcade masonry and renewed its surfaces. Brass furnishings were placed in both nave and chancel. Walter Green Penty added the south vestry in 1878. The Harrison and Harrison organ of 1914 was relocated to St Stephen’s, Acomb, in 1952.
