About St Mary's Church, Castlegate, York
In central York, St Mary's Church, Castlegate, York stands on the historic street of Castlegate. This Grade I listed building was formerly an Anglican parish church, but was made redundant in 1958. It was subsequently adapted for non-religious purposes by George Pace and Ronald Sims, and now provides a venue for contemporary art exhibitions organised by York Museums Trust.
The church has origins in the 11th century, although much of the surviving structure belongs to the 15th century. William Butterfield oversaw restoration work from 1867 to 1870, including a replacement east window, a new roof and reconstruction of the parapet at the eastern end. An organ was repaired by Hopkins of Heworth in 1884, before Abbott & Co supplied another in 1892. Following the church’s redundancy, this instrument was transferred to St Thomas’ Church in Heigham, Norfolk.
