About St John's Church, Micklegate, York
St John's Church, Micklegate, York stands in York, North Yorkshire, and is protected as a Grade II* listed building. Once an Anglican parish church, it closed in 1934. The building was subsequently used to house an archaeological collection, later became York Arts Centre and has more recently operated as a bar.
The earliest surviving fabric is the tower base, dating from the 12th century, while the chancel was built in the 14th century. During the 15th century, the north arcade and aisle were reconstructed and the building was lengthened westwards. After the tower fell in 1551, part of the north aisle required rebuilding. George Fowler Jones directed restoration work in 1850, including a south porch, a reconstructed east end, replacement glazing, flooring and pews. The nave received a new roof in 1866, when a pipe organ by Postill was also installed. Road widening in 1960 led to further rebuilding of the eastern wall and the addition of another porch.
