About St Columba's United Reform Church
St Columba's United Reform Church is a historic United Reformed chapel on Priory Street in central York. Its congregation numbered about 70 in 2015. A community foundation, created in 2008, also enables charities and local groups to use rooms in the building for meetings and office work.
Presbyterian worship in York began at a Goodramgate lecture hall in 1873, and the growing congregation later acquired the Priory Street site. Designed by Thomas Brownlow Thompson, the church opened in 1879 and originally contained a principal hall, classroom and vestry. The two-storey Italianate building is constructed in white brick, with a five-bay frontage, rounded window arches and full-height pilasters. An organ was added in 1907, while the front pediment and corner tower were removed in 1949. Interior features include a western gallery and three stained-glass windows, two displaying insignia associated with Scottish Army regiments. Sections of the original iron boundary railings survive.
