About St Andrew's church, St Andrewgate
St Andrew's church, St Andrewgate stands in central York, North Yorkshire, and is a Grade II* listed building. Although closed for worship in 1559, it had returned to use as a church by 1956 and has since served an independent congregation of Christian Brethren.
A church dedicated to St Andrew appears in the Domesday Book, while the present location is securely recorded in 1194. The surviving chancel was completed by Hugh Grantham in 1392, with the nave added during the following century. After closure, the building served several purposes, including use by St Peter’s School from about 1730. The ruined chancel was converted into a cottage by 1850. Much of the medieval masonry remains, combining Magnesian limestone, recycled Roman gritstone and later brickwork. Original windows survive in both nave and chancel, alongside a blocked chancel arch and the lowest section of a timber bell turret concealed within the roof.
