About Church of St Margaret
The Church of St Margaret is situated in Walmgate, York, North Yorkshire. Once serving as a Church of England parish church, it became redundant in 1974 and was subsequently used by York Theatre Royal as storage space. The Grade I listed building began a new role in 2000 as the National Centre for Early Music, providing a setting for concerts and other events.
Originating in about 1150, the church preserves a southern porch as its only remaining fabric from the 12th century. Its nave belongs to the 1300s, while the vestry was added during the following century. The tower underwent reconstruction in 1684 and 1685. A major renovation led by Thomas Pickersgill in 1851 and 1852 widened the interior by shifting the north wall, increased the gallery, renewed the flooring and pews, and replaced the nave roof. An organ made by Ward dated from 1855, although it is no longer housed there.
