About Church of St Cuthbert
The Church of St Cuthbert is situated at Peasholme Green in York, North Yorkshire. It belongs to the Church of England and has Grade I listed status. Formerly serving as a parish church, the building was linked with St Michael le Belfrey before being adapted for that parish’s office use in 1980. Today it operates under the name The Well Prayer House.
Although its origins are earlier, much of the surviving structure is from the fifteenth century. In about 1430, William de Bowes, an MP who twice held office as York’s Lord Mayor, oversaw extensive renewal and reconstruction. Another programme of work followed in 1859, when the masonry joints were repaired, the interior floor made even and the seating replaced. The church contains memorials to Richard and Sarah Lund, Thomas Kilby, Charles and Mary Mitley, and Ann Simpson. Its nineteenth-century organ, made by York builder William Denman, was subsequently moved to Holy Spirit Church at Ewloe in Flintshire.
