About Central Methodist Church

Central Methodist Church stands on St Saviourgate in central York, North Yorkshire. This Grade II* listed Methodist church remains in use for regular worship and also accommodates charitable and voluntary organisations. It provides breakfasts for people who are homeless or otherwise disadvantaged.

Opened in 1840 as the Centenary Chapel, the church commemorated a century since the earliest Methodist societies were established. James Simpson designed the building in a Classical style, giving it an Ionic-columned entrance, a basement and two upper levels. Rear rooms were repeatedly rebuilt following fires in the nineteenth century, while further enlargements and new vestries were completed between 1881 and 1909. The interior was arranged for 1,500 people, with seating around a horseshoe plan, an oval gallery and surviving numbered box pews. Its organ, made by John Brown in 1841 and reconstructed in 1931, has three manuals and 2,500 pipes. Memorials honour Joseph Agar and the Reverend David Hill, who served as a missionary in China.
