About Church of All Saints

The Church of All Saints serves the Church of England parish in Thornton-le-Dale, North Yorkshire. Still in use as the local parish church, it has been protected at Grade II* since its designation in 1953.

An extensive reconstruction took place during the early 1300s, leaving medieval fabric in the nave and sections of the chancel. The western tower dates from later in that century. Edward Wyndham Tarn directed alterations in 1865–66, when the chancel and vestry were reconstructed, the nave renovated and the windows renewed. The porch on the southern side was completed in 1900. Sandstone walls and a roof covered with stone slabs define the building, which also includes aisles flanking the nave. The four-storey tower has angled supports, clock dials, paired-light bell openings, a crenellated top and decorated pinnacles. Interior features include a medieval piscina and clergy seats, memorials dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and a sheltered effigy tomb showing a woman with a dog beside her feet.
