About Church of Saint Hilda
The Church of Saint Hilda is an Anglican parish church in Ellerburn, a hamlet north of Thornton-le-Dale in North Yorkshire. Serving Ellerburn, Wilton and Farmanby, it forms part of the Moor and Dale benefice in York Diocese. Worship continues in the building, which has Grade II* protection.
Its earliest fabric is believed to have Saxon origins, with the standing structure largely belonging to the 11th century. Older carved fragments were incorporated into the masonry, including a dragon whose gaze turns behind it and a section of a stone cross placed in the porch. Major alterations took place in the 15th century, followed by extensive restoration in 1904 and 1905. A lychgate was added four years later. Work in the early 20th century uncovered a large pre-Reformation stone, perhaps considerably older, which became the Communion table. Burials around the church are known to date back to at least the eighth century.
