About Thornton-le-Beans Chapel

Thornton-le-Beans Chapel stands in Thornton-le-Beans, North Yorkshire. This former Anglican chapel is no longer used for regular worship and is protected as a Grade II listed building. A church conservation group has looked after it since 2010.

Built in 1770, the church originally served as an auxiliary place of worship for St Andrew’s Church in South Otterington. It underwent restoration in 1886 and was formally declared redundant in 1997. The building is constructed from stone, with dressed ashlar details and a Westmorland slate roof. Its straightforward layout comprises a nave of four bays, a chancel and a porch on the south side, while a small gabled bell housing rises at the western end. Other features include a sundial, several single and double-light windows, a pointed east window and pieces of early glass within the nave windows. The font was given by Dr Edward Pusey.
