About St Andrew's Church
St Andrew’s Church stands in Sherburn, North Yorkshire. This former Anglican place of worship is designated at Grade I and is preserved by the Churches Conservation Trust. Dating from 1877, it remains largely as George Edmund Street conceived it, including its furnishings.
Sir Tatton Sykes commissioned the present structure, the third church erected there. Built of carefully dressed sandstone, it has red roof tiles and a 32-metre octagonal spire clad with stone slates. The layout incorporates a nave of five bays, an elevated apsidal chancel, a baptistry, vestry and tower on the north side. James Redfern’s figures of Ambrose, Augustine, Gregory and Jerome decorate the tower. Inside are glazing by Clayton and Bell, oak seating, patterned tiles, an iron screen, and a pulpit fashioned from marble and Caen stone. A painted multi-panel altarpiece represents the Te Deum, while three John Taylor bells date from 1876 and 1877.
