About Church of St Nicholas, Ganton

The Church of St Nicholas, Ganton serves the Church of England parish in Sherburn, North Yorkshire. Designated Grade II* in 1966, it belongs to the Hertford Benefice and Scarborough Deanery. Urgent repairs led to its inclusion on the Heritage at Risk Register in 2012, but completed work allowed its removal two years later.

Its earliest fabric, comprising the chancel and the arch beside the transept, is from the 1200s. Extensive rebuilding followed in the next century, leaving the present nave and southern transept, while the porch and western tower were introduced in the 1400s. A restoration undertaken in 1843 involved reconstructing part of the chancel. Sandstone walls, stone-slate roofing and a stone-slab porch roof characterise the Perpendicular design. The tower is crowned by a battlemented parapet and set-back eight-sided spire. Interior features include Sir John Legard’s Baroque monument and glazing created by William Wailes and Jean-Baptiste Capronnier.
