About Church of St Hilda

The Church of St Hilda is the Church of England parish church serving Sherburn in North Yorkshire. It has been protected as a Grade II* listed building since 1966, reflecting its significant historic and architectural interest.

Originating in the early 1100s, the church retains its nave, chancel arch and the lowest section of its tower from that period. The northern arcade and tower arch date from about 1200. Built in sandstone and roofed with slate, it includes two aisles, a chancel, south porch, vestry, organ chamber and three-stage western tower. C. Hodgson Fowler substantially renewed the exterior between 1909 and 1912, adding the southern arcade and porch and rebuilding the tower’s upper section. Notable details include an embattled parapet, carved shields, a sundial and a richly moulded round-headed doorway. Inside are a Norman circular font and piscina, alongside carved timber furnishings and brass chandeliers.
