About The Old Chapel

The Old Chapel is a former Wesleyan place of worship on Chapel Street in Robin Hoods Bay, North Yorkshire. Dating from the late 18th century, it is protected as a Grade II listed building. Religious services later moved elsewhere, and the premises have since accommodated several secular uses, including storage for a fisherman, an artist’s workspace, an exhibition venue, a second-hand bookshop and a vegetarian café.

Built in 1779, the church hosted John Wesley as a preacher on 28 June that year. It originally stood behind cottages, a roadway and a grassy slope, but a substantial collapse of the cliff in 1780 brought the edge very close to the structure. Writer Leo Walmsley attended lessons in its schoolroom. Worship ceased there after another Methodist church opened in the upper village in 1936. By 2007, the ground floor contained a café and gift shop, while the former gallery had become the Swell Cinema.
