About Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady and St Edward

The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady and St Edward stands in Driffield, East Riding of Yorkshire. Serving the town’s Roman Catholic community, it has been protected as a Grade II listed building since 2015.

Before its construction, local Catholics met first in a private house and later at Driffield Corn Exchange. The present church was built in 1886 to plans by Edward Simpson, with stained glass added from 1893 to 1919. Designed in the Romanesque style, it combines red brick, yellow terracotta details and a tiled roof. Its plan includes a nave, chancel, apse, north chapel, porch and vestry, while a gabled bellcote rises above the western end. Decorative round arches feature dogtooth, chevron and nail-head patterns. Inside are stone altar furnishings, oak seating and a large image of the Virgin and Child, thought to reproduce a sixteenth-century Italian work.
