About St Stephen's church, Robin Hood's Bay
St Stephen’s church, Robin Hood’s Bay, serves as the Church of England parish church for Fylingdales. Located in Robin Hoods Bay, North Yorkshire, it forms part of the Fylingdales and Hawsker cum Stainsacre benefice. The building has changed little since its completion and was designated Grade II* in 1969.
Erected from 1868 to 1870, the church succeeded Old St Stephen’s on a site chosen for easier access, near the former railway station. George Edmund Street conceived it in Decorated Gothic form, using sandstone walls, red tiled roofing and embellished ridge tiles. The layout features a clerestory above the nave, an aisle and porch on the southern side, an apsidal chancel, chapel, vestry and organ chamber. Its south-eastern tower rises through four levels beneath a saddleback roof. Henry Holiday created several of the stained-glass windows, while the round font may have survived from Fylingdales’ demolished mediaeval place of worship.
