About Church of St Peter
The Church of St Peter is a Church of England place of worship in Luttons, North Yorkshire. The present sandstone building is protected as a Grade II listed church, a designation granted in 1966.
A church serving Helperthorpe was documented in the 1100s, with a replacement erected during the 16th century and repaired in 1829. After attendance declined, that building was taken down and the parish united with Weaverthorpe. Sir Tatton Sykes commissioned the present chapel, built from 1872 to 1875 to designs by George Edmund Street. Temple Moore enlarged it in 1893 with a northern aisle and vestry. Set on a bevelled base and roofed with tiles, the church includes a nave, chancel, south porch and western steeple. The tower rises in three levels beneath a broach spire, while notable interior fittings include a round font, stone pulpit, iron chancel screen, Moore-designed seating and stained glass by Burlison and Grylls.
