About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary is a Church of England parish church in Luttons, North Yorkshire. It remains the parish church of West Lutton and has been protected at Grade II* since 1966.
A chapel serving the parish probably stood here from the early 1100s. It was replaced in 1874–75 by the present church, designed by George Edmund Street and financed by Sir Tatton Sykes. Sandstone walls rise from a sloping plinth beneath tiled roofs, with a nave, two aisles, chancel, vestry and south porch. A timber belfry clad in tiles supports a broach spire and weathercock. One arch from the former chapel was incorporated above the vestry entrance. Interior details include a painted wooden altar, stone pulpit and octagonal font, together with an iron and brass screen. Burlison and Grylls created the stained glass and the triptych reredos showing the Crucifixion; their west window illustrates the Tree of Jesse.
