About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary in Leake, North Yorkshire, is a Church of England parish church. With fabric originating around 1150, it remains an important medieval place of worship and has been protected at Grade I since 1970.
Built from stone and roofed with lead and Welsh slate, the church has a central worship space flanked by aisles, an elevated clerestory, a chancel, southern porch and western tower. The tower and portions of the nave masonry belong to the original twelfth-century structure. The northern aisle was created early in the following century, and its southern counterpart towards that century’s close. Reconstruction of the chancel ended in 1313, followed by the clerestory around 1370. The interior contains a medieval piscina, seating from the Jacobean period, three choir stalls dated 1519, a font lid from the seventeenth century and a sixteenth-century memorial brass for John Watson and his wife.
