About Saint Oswald's Church

Saint Oswald’s Church is an active Church of England parish church in Filey, North Yorkshire. Standing on the northern side of the ravine that separates parts of the town, it occupies a prominent clifftop position. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building and forms part of a benefice that also includes St John’s in Filey and St Thomas’ in Gristhorpe.

The cruciform building dates from around 1150, although much of its architecture reflects the transition from Norman to Early English styles between the late 12th and early 13th centuries. Its Norman central tower once helped sailors navigate the coast and approach Filey’s sands. The nave has six bays, while the lower chancel is reached by two steps. Later work included 15th-century battlements and restoration during the 19th century. A major programme completed in 1886 lowered the floors to their earlier level and repaired deteriorating walls. Notable details include Early English sedilia and a carved figure set into the nave’s south wall.
