About Church of St Hilda

The Church of St Hilda is a Church of England place of worship in Egton, North Yorkshire. It belongs to the Middle Esk Moor united benefice, which comprises five churches. The building has been protected at Grade II since 1969.

Edward H. Smales, an architect from the area, designed the present building, which was finished in 1879 and consecrated in December of that year. Its construction was supported by the Foster family, philanthropic landowners locally, and several family memorials are housed inside. The walls combine dressed sandstone with finely cut stone detailing, beneath a roof covered with stone slates. This building succeeded a Norman church that stood roughly one kilometre west of Egton and was taken down in 1878. At the earlier location, the burial ground survives together with three pillar foundations from the Norman structure and a mortuary chapel added in 1897.
