About Church of St Hedda
The Church of St Hedda is an active Roman Catholic parish church at Egton Bridge, near Egton in North Yorkshire. It was designated a Grade II listed building in 1998 and continues to serve the local Catholic community.
A Catholic chapel stood at Egton Bridge by 1743 and was succeeded by a new church in 1790. The present, larger building was completed in 1867 to designs by Hadfield and Son, while its predecessor became St Hedda’s Catholic Primary School. Constructed in stone, with Welsh slate roofing and terracotta ridge tiles, the church has a nave, two aisles, chancel and apse. The west front includes a gabled bellcote, pointed doorway and round window. Inside are the original timber pews, an eight-sided pulpit, an organ gallery and a stencilled wooden barrel vault. The richly ornamented chancel contains a coloured and gilded altar with reredos. A circular stone font dating from about 1790 probably came from the earlier church.
