About Church of St Mary the Virgin

The Church of St Mary the Virgin is the Church of England parish church serving Ebberston, within Ebberston and Yedingham in North Yorkshire. It remains a parish church and has held Grade II* listed status since 1953.

Originating in the 12th century, the church initially comprised a nave and chancel. Its south doorway and font survive from that period. A north aisle was introduced around 1200, followed later in the 13th century by an enlarged nave, substantial chancel reconstruction and a south chapel, which was removed near the time of the Reformation. The probable 14th-century west tower has two levels, paired louvred bell openings and a battlemented parapet. Built from sandstone and roofed with slate, the structure was reroofed in 1797. Ewan Christian directed restoration work from 1870 to 1876, adding the porch and reconstructing the southern sides of both nave and chancel. A carved grotesque head on the north wall is probably medieval.
