About Church of St John the Baptist, Yedingham

The Church of St John the Baptist, Yedingham is the Church of England parish church for Yedingham, within Ebberston and Yedingham in North Yorkshire. It remains the village’s parish church and has held Grade II listed status since 1966.

Yedingham first had a church in the 12th century, although the present building dates largely from a complete reconstruction in 1862–63. William Butterfield designed the chancel, while William Tuke was responsible for the nave. Built in sandstone and roofed with stone slates, the church comprises a nave of three bays and a chancel. Its western end has a double bellcote beneath a gable, supported by a broad pilaster buttress pierced by rounded arches. Parts of the southern entrance and the font survive from the earlier church. The doorway retains 12th-century decorative stonework, and the tub-shaped font stands upon an eight-sided base. Rounded windows and horizontal sill courses line the sides.
