About Saint Mary's
Saint Mary's is a Roman Catholic church in Craythorne, North Yorkshire. Completed in 1821, it is among the area’s earliest surviving Catholic chapels and has held Grade II* listed status since 1966.
Built in pale red brick, the single-storey church has a Welsh slate covering, bracket-supported eaves and stonework along the gables. Three Tudor-arched windows line one side, while a porch added following the Second World War stands to the south-west. The building adjoins an eighteenth-century former presbytery, now a private residence. Inside are Gothic-style furnishings and ornament, a gallery at the western end and enclosed pews. Its elaborate plaster decoration, thought to be the work of Italian craftspeople, may once have been brightly coloured. The church underwent restoration during the mid-1960s.
