About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary serves as Cloughton’s Church of England parish church in North Yorkshire. It is recognised for its architectural and historic interest and has held Grade II listed status since 1951.
A medieval predecessor, comprising a nave, chancel, northern aisle, southern porch and western bellcote, was removed in 1831. J. Thompson and G. Taylor designed the building that replaced it, which Smith, Brodrick and Lowther enlarged and restored in 1889–90. Constructed from sandstone with a slate covering, the church has a unified roof over the nave and chancel, alongside a northern chapel, organ chamber and southern vestry. Notable details include a three-opening bellcote, Tudor-style arched entrances and a five-light east window with Perpendicular tracery. Inside are a marble memorial dated 1704 to William and Priscilla Bower, an Eric Gill war memorial tablet, and a southern aisle window honouring Frank Lockwood.
