About Church of Saint Mary

The Church of Saint Mary is a Church of England parish church in Dalton Holme, serving South Dalton in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It remains the village’s parish church and has held Grade I listed status since 1968.

A medieval church previously occupied the site, but this was replaced between 1858 and 1861. Beaumont Hotham commissioned John Loughborough Pearson to design the new stone and slate building in the Gothic Revival style. Its most prominent feature is a slender 208-foot west steeple with an octagonal spire. Pearson also designed the interior furnishings and a vestry added in 1878. Stained glass by Clayton and Bell includes an east window showing the Last Judgement. Memorials to the Hotham family were brought from the earlier building, among them an elaborate marble tomb for Sir John Hotham, 2nd Baronet. The three-manual William Hill organ dates from 1877 and was enlarged by Hull organ builders Foster & Andrews in 1897.
