About Church of All Saints, Brompton-by-Sawdon
The Church of All Saints, Brompton-by-Sawdon is the Church of England parish church serving Brompton, near Scarborough in North Yorkshire. It remains an active place of worship and has held Grade I listed status since 1967. William Wordsworth and Mary Hutchinson were married here in 1802, an event commemorated by a bicentenary festival in 2002.
A church occupied the site by the 1100s, and pieces of that Norman building survive within the walls. The present tower and nave are chiefly 14th-century, while the chancel, southern aisle and arcade were added during the following century. Constructed from sandstone and roofed with slate, the building has a three-stage tower crowned by an octagonal spire. Restoration took place in 1878, followed by the addition of the south porch in 1895. Inside are a circular 13th-century font, monuments dating from 1580 and 1688, and an organ case and gallery designed by Temple Moore in 1893.
