About Chapel of Rest, Brompton, Scarborough
The Chapel of Rest, Brompton, Scarborough stands within the cemetery at Brompton in North Yorkshire. Designed by Temple Lushington Moore and built in 1889, it is protected as a Grade II listed building, a designation granted in September 2019.
The cemetery was established after the Revd Francis Chambers, appointed vicar of All Saints in 1880, initiated improvements that included closing the former churchyard. Sir George Cayley of Brompton Hall financed the cemetery chapel and commissioned Moore, then aged 33, as architect. The building was an early project in Moore’s career, before he became known for designing and restoring numerous churches. Its principal architectural features are a wide cemetery-facing gable and an off-centre bell tower crowned by a pyramid-shaped roof, giving the chapel a notably irregular outline.
