About St Brigid's Church
St Brigid’s Church is a Roman Catholic parish church at 36 Newton Street in Kilbirnie, North Ayrshire. It belongs to the Diocese of Galloway and is one of three churches serving the parish, alongside Our Lady’s in Beith and St Palladius in Dalry.
Catholic worship in Kilbirnie began in 1858. Father Thomas P Lee, an Irish priest from Limerick, became the resident priest in 1859 and travelled weekly on horseback from Johnstone. He secured land and funds for a church dedicated to St Brigid. The church and its presbytery opened in 1862, built in a restrained Gothic design. The rectangular building included a gallery, porch, vestry and confessional. A school followed in 1894. Post-war population growth led to substantial enlargement, including a rear extension and new porch and baptistery at the front. The renovated church reopened in 1957 with a new sanctuary, sacristy and accommodation for altar servers.
